Crash Out
Tinashe
Favorite part
I love the grimy, droning synth only ceasing for certain parts of Tinashe's verses.
I listened to a ton of relatively new albums this week, so my choice for today’s Song of the Week was highly contested. That being said, Tinashe’s new album, Popstar, stood out to me. I can’t pretend like I’m familiar with Tinashe’s discography, whereas last week I was right in my element with Beyoncé. I know she’s famed for her R&B presence and production prowess, with minimal lyrical contributions. This album doesn’t depart from these staples, but twists her traditional R&B sound into something multi-textured: mixing in art pop and grungy club conventions.
This track, in particular, is reminiscent of the modern trap sound, the birthplace of the above-mentioned droning synth and these drum combinations. Even in the messaging of the song, Tinashe justifies her genre jump. When the relaxed, melodic vibe of R&B doesn’t match your energy, trap music is always good for a crash out, in my opinion.
Give this one a listen, and make it a great week. I’ll see you next Wednesday!
